  • 12/17/2007 - It was one year ago today that I annouced new life coming into Atomic Tanks. Since then, Atomic Tanks has gone through eight releases, fixing numberous bugs and adding small features. Atomic Tanks has spread to be included in at least two new Linux distributions and has been featured in gaming magazines. I call that a success. I am glad to annouce that I am happy to continue working on Atomic Tanks and I hope that members of the community will continue to aid in the development of this fun little game. I couldn't do this without the hard work of artists, packagers, documentation writers and people offering up suggestions and bug reports. Thank you all.

I would like to mark this occasion by releasing Atomic Tanks v2.7. At the moment, this is just a source and .rpm release, but I hope a Windows version will soon follow. Please see this forum post for details of what's changed since the previous release.

Update: a package for Windows has now been released. You can grab a copy from our download page.

  • 11/08/2007 - Today brings the release of Atomic Tanks version 2.6! It's been a while in the making, but we have some interesting features to share. • 03/15/2007 - We've made some website changes. A few things have been moved, a few pages have been updated. The biggest change is that the Atomic Tanks website no longer uses PHP. This is to make updates a little more simple and to avoid any problems that result from this being the month of PHP bugs. We expect the transition to be smooth. However, if you spot a problem with our web pages, please send an e-mail.

  • 01/10/2007 - M, from the Debian team, found a rather nasty bug in Atanks-2.0. To correct this, I have pulled the download from this site. A fixed version (Atanks-2.0-final) is now making its way to a Sourceforge mirror near you. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    -- Jesse

    -- Jesse

PS. The forums have been moved.

  • 11/11/2004 - Forums added to the site, I finally got around to it and it really needed doing (the sourceforge forums just aren't that nice).

    - Tom

  • 10/11/2004 - A new project manager has been found in my stead, please welcome alteest at users.sourceforge.net as the one who will bring your much-asked-for networking to atanks, among other rather splendid sounding plans.

Also, I've released the alpha code (1.5a) I'd been working on which most significantly adds an entirely new and friendly way of creating weapons.
The source is in CVS and available as a download, but do bear in mind it _is_ alpha quality. This version requires allegro 4.1 due to allegro API changes.

    - Tom

  • 14/10/2004 - I'm looking for a Project Manager to take over this project. There's a lot of potential for this game however I haven't the time any more to spend on it. Contact me at atanks@singular.org.uk if you're interested.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 04/03/2004 - If you've created your own insults file (by editing revenge.txt) feel free to send it my way (atanks@singular.org.uk) and I'll make it available from the website for download (though there are limits on what I'll make available).

    - Tom Hudson

  • 13/02/2004 - I'm currently working on moving all of the hard-coded weaponry out into an editable text file that will allow you to edit existing weapons and create your own new ones. So far it's parsing and reading in the definition files but there's quite a lot of work that needs doing to remove the hard-coded tests etc. in the code.

Perhaps when it's working and available someone will write an editor to make it easy to create new weapons.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 05/02/2004 - Atanks v1.1.0 - This release contains command-line switches to set the screen/window size and 16 or 32-bit colour, large improvements to AI, 2 new items to counter the affect of permanent armour increases, a shopping trolley system in the shop and the ability to sell items back, right-mouse button for faster changes to options and various bug fixes.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 04/02/2004 - Well I was hoping to get a release out tonight but spotted a rather major bug that had the AI aiming at itself every so often. I have now fixed it however there isn't time to get a release out today.

Tomorrow. Promise. Unless there's another bug serious enough to keep it back.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 03/02/2004 - Finally, v1.1.0 is almost ready.
The release will be made in 24-48 hours time.

To whet your appetite, in this release:

    • New command-line options to set data directory, screen/window width and height and 16-bit or 32-bit colour.
    • AI changes to make them use basic tactics and lay framework for further improvements.
    • Changes to armour so the more you buy the less effect it has each purchase.
    • New items Intensity Amplifier and Violent Force which increase damage done by explosive weapons.
    • Shopping trolley functionality and ability to sell items back to the shop.
    • 2 new AI skill-levels, one extremely stupid, the other quite accurate.
    • Right mouse on up/down arrows in options for faster changes.
    • AI buys more parachutes.
    • A variety of bugs fixed.
    • Generalisation of missile code to allow easier creation of new weapons.
    - Tom Hudson

  • 13/01/2004 - I know there haven't been any updates for a while and we were aiming for a pre-christmas release (which clearly hasn't happened) but...
Between actually writing code for the changes for the next release and other commitments (family, visiting people, christmas etc.) I haven't had the time. This update is just to let you know that yes, there is still work going on, and there should be a new release RSN. As mentioned previously the shopping trolley functionality has been implemented and has now been extended to include selling back items you bought in previous rounds at a loss (the sellback value can be set in options but defaults to 80%). The AI improvements are almost complete, with more difficult and more useless opponents, and more varied/efficient/interesting use of weapons. Also, there are changes to the amount of armour you get; each purchase gets you less than the purchase before. To go with the increasing amounts of armour there will also be similar items for increasing the damage done by your weapons. Some changes to the internals of the missile code should allow much easier creation of new weapons, so I hope to have time to add more soon (not this release).

    - Tom Hudson

  • 16/12/2003 - In the next release there will be the much asked for 'shopping trolley' functionality, allowing players to put items back. This means that you can undo accidental purchases or change your mind when you realise you don't have enough money left over for something vital.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 15/12/2003 - We're aiming for a pre-christmas 1.1.0 release, which will include improvements to the AI targetting and general weapon-usage (for those who've complained it's too easy), the AI will _usually_ buy parachutes rather than just occasionally and there's a couple of bug-fixes.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 12/12/2003 - It's been brought to my attention that Atanks is mentioned on the Linux Journal website, I haven't been able to get hold of the magazine so I don't know if it's mentioned there. If anyone can confirm one way or another please mail me at atanks@singular.org.uk. I'm also informed by Robert Wills that Atanks is reviewed in Linux Format this month.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 25/11/2003 - Atanks v1.0.0 Stable - After months of testing and bugfixing, here it is, Version 1.0.0 of Atanks!

    - Tom Hudson

  • 26/08/2003 - Release Candidate 1.0.0-rc1 - Added 'last words' and revenge to AI players. AI players may now retaliate if they are vengeful, and insult you even if they aren't. The number of frames per second has been dropped from 100 to 60. This is controlled by a define (FRAMES_PER_SECOND) and can easily be changed at compile time if desirable. The lower frame-rate allows for more processing between frames and should result in smoother animation on slower machines. There are now checks for memory allocation failures to handle them more gracefully. A bug was fixed which would result in missiles never exploding, there is now a 15 second maximum lifetime.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 20/08/2003 - New Release 0.9.9d including a win32 build - This release brings Atomic Tanks that bit closer to v1.0.
After this release the emphasis will be on getting the game stable for a v1.0 release.
The additional feature in this release is Accelerated AI, which is turned on by default and means that once all human players are out of a round, the AI play will be at accelerated rates. You'll be able to hear what's happening and see the aftermath, but you can't see the play in progress. This probably won't be a problem as it finishes extremely fast this way.
You can now see the difficulty level of the AI on the selection screen, and which players are human. Holding down Ctrl now allows stepping of angle and power (thanks to Patrick Bogen for the suggestion).
The pause facility now really pauses as the bug has been fixed.
Also, under win32 I've fixed the bug which would cause configs (mostly player info) to get messed up and make every player after the first appear to be full of rubbish characters.
If anyone's interested in contributing to the v1.0 release email jessefrgsmith@yahoo.ca or post on the forums.
  • 18/08/2003 - Thanks go to Patrick Bogen for producing a debian package of atanks. The package is available for download from sourceforge.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 17/08/2003 - Some New Screenshots!

    - Tom Hudson

  • 15/08/2003 - New release 0.9.9b. Financial changes abound, including no longer losing money for self-damage, extra money for damaging others, and a bonus for winning a round. There are also new options for controlling these settings. Shields will no longer disappear at the end of a round, instead they will be recharged and carried through to the next round. Players may now be deleted individually.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 11/08/2003 - New release 0.9.9a. There are two new subterranean weapons, Burrower and Penetrator, which go underground on impact and continue travelling until they rise to the surface and detonate.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 10/08/2003 - As you may have noticed the site has had a face-lift to better fit the graphics of the game.

    - Tom Hudson

    - Tom Hudson

  • 08/08/2003 - New release 0.9.8h. Backspace bug discovered and fixed in text entry fields. So far this has only been reported under Mac OS X, but it could potentially affect other systems. The bug meant it was impossible to delete anything. Thanks go to Kalle Toivonen for the fix.

    - Tom Hudson

    - Tom Hudson

  • 02/08/2003 - New release 0.9.8e. Minor changes to make packaging easier and to detect and report initialisation errors.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 01/08/2003 - New release 0.9.8d. Linux binary and source releases only this time. This addresses some usability issues. Now, the first time it is run 10 computer players are created and also a human player which should be edited during startup. This should make it easier to just get straight into a game. Also there are improvements to the 'Guesser' AI (more random now) and CPU usage under linux shouldn't be as high when on menu screens.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 01/08/2003 - New release 0.9.8c. Instruction page added, credits page improved to look more spangly, player money can no longer drop below 0 and a bug in attribution of money when a tank falls has been fixed.

    - Tom Hudson

  • 31/07/2003 - This site has had to move from its original home due to a sudden increase in traffic saturating the link, and is now hosted here (http://atanks.sourceforge.net). Hopefully this will cope better <:-)

    - Tom Hudson

  • 23/07/2003 - New release 0.9.8b. There are now 3 difficulty levels for the AI, several bug-fixes and minor changes. Also, a pre-compiled allegro dll is now included in the win32 distribution to simplify installation.
